The GEC Global Meeting and the 2019 PAGE Ministerial Conference

The Green Economy Coalition (GEC) held its annual meeting and Global Summit in Capetown, South Africa on the 7-9th of January 2019. The event brought together delegates and GEC partners from around the world to discuss priorities in green economy policy actions, the role of civil society in it and inclusive growth among other issues.

Odonchimeg Ikhbayar, Deputy Director of the Economic Policy and Competitiveness Research Center participated in both events introducing Mongolia’s transition status to a greener economy and further highlights from the EPCRC’s Green Economy Barometer study and the ongoing Ger District Mapping study done by the GEC’s Mongolia hub.     

During the Annual Global Summit, Representatives of civil society, governments and the private sector gave their voices regarding the green economy, sustainable development challenges that they face, and ways to achieve sustainable growth faster.

This year’s global meeting was organized under the theme “Everyone Getting a Stake” or how everyone can get a stake in the transition to a new, greener economic system. In that sense, the meeting was filled with networking sessions and heated discussions. The policy priorities which are most important to create green and fair economies and to give people stakes were discussed among participants within the themes of:   

  • Finance
  • Inclusion
  • SMEs
  • Natural capital & GE strategies

The GEC is the world’s largest movement for green and fair economies, consisting of over 300 civil society networks around the world. The GEC was formed to promote the idea of greener economies that offer a pathway for communities to take ownership of local natural resources; for poorer nations to develop cleaner energy systems. In order to achieve green economy, the GEC conduct following five actions including, measuring and governing, reforming the financial system, greening economic sectors, tackling inequality and valuing nature.

The event was in held ahead of the United Nation’s Partnership for Action on Green Economy (UN PAGE) Initiative’s high-level Ministerial Conference in Capetown which took place during the following days.

Some of the featured speakers during the UN PAGE Ministerial Conference are Guy Ryder, Director General of the International Labour Organization, and Kumi Naidoo, Secretary General of Amnesty International, together with more than 10 ministers of environment, finance and industry from all over the world. South Africa’s environment minister, Nomvula Paula Mokonyane, hosted the event.
